Black Magic on Valentine Day.

First, Happy Valentine everyone! I hope you had wonderful “celebration” with your loved one.

I had wonderful time with my lovely friends, an American couple who live in Ubud now. They had invited me for nice dinner at their favorite restaurant. We spent several hours for chatting about various things. And one of the subjects was about black magic. LOL. Talked about black magic on Valentine dinner? Why not?

“Do you believe in black magic?”, asked my friend. In a minute his wife also asked me, “and do you believe in white magic?”

It was a very common question from many tourist or westerners who have visited the islands of Bali. As Indonesian, I understand that curiosity because we have different believe system. Even among Indonesian, we also have different point of view about it.

Just imagine…. Indonesia is a country which consists about seventeen thousand islands with more than about three hundred kinds of ethnic groups exists which having cultural diversity. The history showed that regarding the location of the islands which strategic for trading and also penetrating the new cultures, Indonesia ( used to called as Nusantara) had a lot of influences or tradition from various cultures ~ mostly from India, China, and Arabia. Those influences came through local cultures, blended, and had liven up during hundred years. No wonder that black magic which grew as a part of some those traditions became one thing which still very prevalent known for being practiced by many in Indonesia. Most of Balinese people for example, they are believe about the power of black and white magic.

For some people or in some religious believe system (in Indonesia), any practice of black or white magic both are not something acceptable because they considering it something which not align with religious frame.

What is actually the meaning of black and white magic? Well, if you check on Wikipedia for example, the black magic mentioned is referred to the use of supernatural powers or magic for evil acts and selfish purposes. And the white magic described that it referred to the use of supernatural powers or magic for good and selfless purposes.

Back to my friend’s question, my answer was, “I do believe that it does exist”.

I used to grow in Lombok Island for several years where I had “experiences” saw people had black magic attacks. As a kid, I was confuse how come people can get sick and then die with strange ways. Several friends of my sister and brother lost their mind and got horrible tantrum or trance. I had a lot of “bad” memories about it which made me angry, how could people become so mean that they hurt other with that way.

When I moved to Java, I thought I would not hear that kind of story again. But I was wrong. I heard similar “stories”. And when I getting older and older, I found it does exist in almost every place (in Indonesia and South East Asia ) regarding the “tradition” believe. Even it’s happened to me once too.

When I shared my experiences got black magic attacks, both my friends starred to me like they just saw a dolphin flying in front of them. “And how did you overcome them? Did you go to priest or somebody? Did you know who did it?”.

It’s very human if you angry and tried to figure out who cheated or stabbing your back. You cant not accept it because you felt you did not do something harm to other; you did not deserve to have it. But I learned from my experience that it was not necessary to figure out who did that to us. It will only create more anger and somehow fears in our mind.

“The way they worked with black magic is using our fears and anger”, I made underline of my answers. More we felt angry or fears, more it could come to us. This is the game of mind. The danger about our mind is when we believe something happened, it will happen bigger ( In positive or negative point of view). In bad sample, some people who are really believe that the black magic is exist, they consider any problem or things happened to them was because of black magic.

My mentor who is Jero Mangku shared how difficult for him to explain to some people who came to him that what happened was not black magic attack, but it was very logic thing. But since they were scared since the beginning, what they thought was only black magic and they expecting that a priest can help to purify them.

“Even if they got black magic, they can do purification by their self”, added this Jero Mangku. I agree.

So answering my friend question how I managed thing when I got black magic attack, I told them that I did not need to go to certain people but I mostly focus on prayers ( I do believe power of prayers) that I wanted being protected more by Highest Divine, being surrender, and sending loves and forgiveness. When I was sending loves and forgiveness, I was actually sending reflection for myself. If I angry and curse them back, it’s same I actually send those angry back to me. Loves and forgiveness is huge power. By keep have positive mind and do prayers, it’s actually same that you are raising your vibration. Love, joy, compassion and forgiveness are some of the emotions which could raise your vibration.

Even though you are good person but if you have a low vibrational frequency, it will make you are more liable to receive or get the effects of black magic. Low frequencies are associated with disharmony in our body also our emotion. The emotions which make your vibrational go down are the feeling such fear, guilt, or shame.

For me personally, I do not want to determine the definition or beliefs about black magic only refers to an act that connected to mystical, bad rituals or using bad spirits.Even without those "ritual", we can do something which considered same like what people did with black magic. Everything that we do is based on the intention. Despite using ordinary words or use the Holy Scripture, people who are intentionally trying to hurt someone or who don’t care who suffers for them to obtain what they want actually not different with people who associated did black magic.

So be careful when you starting have negative thinking about other, you starting curse them and have intention in order they can get something (bad) happen, you actually sending that “hopes” back to you ( anytime). That is why sending love and forgiveness is become the best option.
